"What's this supervision thing they're doing on you?" Hermione asks, swinging her legs on the half wall. She and Brooke have monopolised their usual corner of the quad, waiting for the others in their group.
"Oh, they're making me finish all homework to 90% because I showed off that I just ignore a quarter of the questions." Brooke says, standing on the half wall and balancing, breaking school rule #19.
"Oh my days, that's the stupidest thing you've ever done." Hermione exclaims, turning and staring at her. "Are you seriously saying you deliberately got 71% on every assignment when you could easily get a top mark?"
"Sure. Why waste time on the rest of the questions?" Brooke asks. "I'm not some geeky teacher's pet."
"Brooke, you could get the top mark in the school and nobody would think you're a teacher's pet." Hermione rolls her eyes. "Seriously, you're making a huge mistake. Teachers hate bright people who don't try, but if you're a straight A student, you can get away with anything."
"Like what?" Brooke asks.
"Like... you know that sixth former, Jaz? According to my sister, last year, she came in with hair extensions, and they turned a blind eye. Made it a new school rule after and said nobody was to copy, sure, but didn't make her have them removed. Those three ear piercings each side? Nobody 'notices'. I heard she's going to get a tattoo next. And you know why? Straight A student. She even ran for head girl, and she almost won. Small price to pay for a few extra minutes a day."
Brooke considers this.
"So what you're saying is that in return for a small daily effort, I could have a far greater impact as master prankster for fewer sanctions?"
"Yep." Hermione grins.
At this moment, they're interrupted by one of the shyer kids in their class, Olivia, who has been noted to be copying them somewhat. Unlike the 'popular gang' lead by Sara, who rejected Olivia in week one, Brooke and Hermione have been kind enough not to take the mick. Today, Olivia is sporting the hitched skirt safety pin look that Brooke started doing last week.
"Hi!" Olivia climbs up onto the half wall. "Whatcha up to?"
"Just hanging." Hermione says. "Might go get changed early for hockey. I hate changing in the gym when everyone's crowding."
"Yeah, I'll come with." Brooke agrees, jumping down and heading towards the gym. Olivia dutifully follows them, chatting away.
Sadly, their plan is interrupted by the arrival of Sara's gang to the gym. Brooke ignores the whispers and glances in their direction. It's a tactic meant to unnerve her, as the biggest girl in their class, into feeling body conscious. So far it hasn't succeeded; this is 2020 after all.
